OVERVIEW:

Tembea Youth Centre for Sustainable Development is an indigenous Community Based Development Organization based in Ugunja, Siaya district, Nyanza Province, Kenya. Founded in 2003 Tembea have evolved as a centre of excellence in community empowerment, environmental stewardship and sustainabity. With a host of skilled personel, sound leadership and governance structures, Tembea have trained a community of field animators that work in solidirity with the benefieries of our programs.

Our Vision:
Tembea ”envisions a community that respects human rights, promotes wholesome and equitable development of its male and female members whereas upholding environmental stewardship”

Our Mission: To enhance socio- economic capacity of communities through asset based community development, networking and collaboration so as to achieve self-reliance and sustainable livelihood & growth through health, environment conservation and poverty alleviation program at grass roots level.

Programatic Objectives

To promote environmental stewardship through related initiatives for the community members, environmental and natural resources institutions and organizations through collaboration and partnership programmes.

  • To advocate for human rights and good governance by enhancing active citizenship.
  • To improve group and individual knowledge and skills for sustainable development through the use of appropriate technologies.
  • To make information available and accessible to groups and individuals on appropriate technologies for sustainable development.
  • To provide a forum for sharing, exchanging, collecting, and referencing information.
  • To respond to educational socio?economic, recreational emotional and psychological needs of young people.
  • To fight HIV/AIDS pandemic in the community.

Tembea’s programmes are categorized into three thrusts:

  • Environment and Natural Resource management
  • Human Rights Advocacy and Good Governance
  • Training, Education and Applied Research
  • Administration and Finance
